. . . there's the age-old question: is a recording of a piece of classical music supposed to be a record of a musical event or is it an "art form" unto itself?There are many in the recording industry (probably audiophiles, too)who desire the increased clarity--beyond that which is obtained in the concert hall--that multimiking/panned-mono delivers. That clarity can unravel dense instrumental and contrapuntal textures. To me it makes it sound as if you are standing two feet away from every instrument.
