Ligeti and Aimard, that's a good question. The etudes are becoming common, so I have heard a few recently so it's not fair (entirely) to compare live to a CD - that out of the way my favorites have been Aimard and Christopher Taylor. I hope Aimard never "owns" these works, but yeah, he has a lock on them.I'm still a fan of the warhorse riders on Beethoven, I have the live carnegie hall CD with a sonata (which is just OK), and I've heard, but don't own, the concerti. I like a lot of things Aimard does, but I don't just don't like Harnoncourt. I heard a fantastic live Mozart symphony broadcast from Salzburg that he did, but upon buying a two cd set of early symphonies I found them to be flat. The live version (vienna phil in both cases) was alive and dancing, the CD was ummm... not.
In Debussy I think Aimard is brushing off the encrusted activity of all the soft focus Debussy interpreters. I am a huge fan of Geiseking Debussy, but there should be another way - and I think that other way is closer to how Debussy wanted his works to sound.
I hope he does more.
Which reminds me I have to get some Joyce Hatto CDs when I have money...
