Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

No great loss is right!

When Eschenbach conducted the Cleveland Orchestra on a tour many years ago (one stop in SF), my editor at the time confided that some of his friends in the orchestra had told him that they were embarrassed to be touring under Eschenbach, and that they too often had to cover for Eschenbach's mistakes. The editor only mentioned this after he had seen the text of my review, wherein I stated that parts of Eschenbach's Tchaikovsky Fourth sounded awfully tentative. (And this was the Cleveland Orchestra, for crying out loud!) Of course, Eschenbach may have improved in the meantime, but I never did see what all the fuss over him was about.
