Rachmaninoff wrote this in 1895 when he was 22 years old fresh out of the music conservatory. Cesar Cui, one of the Russian five said of it; "If there were a conservatory in hell, Mr. Rachmaninoff would take first prize for his symphony." Apparantly critics, audiences, fellow composers and even Rachmaninoff himself didn't like it. It lead him into a state of depression which was a crisis in his career. He was persuaded to visit Dr. Nikoli Dahl who used hypnosis and post hypnotic suggestion to get Rachmaninoff out of it and the treatment resulted in his second piano concerto and the other brilliant works which followed.I'm not familiar with this symphony but I thought you'd enjoy the anecdote. Is the symphony any good?
