if your question really is, "isn't there a better word than favorite," then we're all limited by the choice of words available in the English language. One of the fun aspects of English is that you often find a range of words meaning roughly the same thing but each having its own shading of that meaning. Writers look for the word that is just right, and a thesaurus is an invaluable tool.Sometimes, though, there isn't a range of words available, and only one has the right shading. In this case the writer has a choice: make up a new word (impractical if you want to write in a clear, effective way so that folks understand you), or re-cast the sentence. This is what writers do.
If "favorite" is not favored, you would re-cast "Bach is my favorite composer" to "I prefer Bach to other composers." You would re-cast "My favorite version of Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra is Reiner's" to "Of all the interpretations of the Concerto for Orchestra I like Reiner's the best."
You could also employ a metaphor, but we'll come to that in our next lesson.
Now, if you really get as pissed off as you seem to do when folks tell you there isn't an effective substitute for the word "favorite," then you need psychological help. You might as well get mad because it's raining outside.
According to my current rates, you owe me about $75 for the tutoring. Email me and I'll tell you where to send the check.
