I went to a classical concert last week (Sibelius, Shostakovich and Rachmaninov) at my local concert hall with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra conducted by Adam (son of Richard) Hickox conducting with front row circle tickets at £29 and "Kids of a Quid", so I paid just £1 for a child's first classical music concert. We both enjoyed the evening with up to 80 musicians playing
How can 80 musicians play for such low ticket prices, particularly when so many seats were unsold?
Decades ago, I used to live in London where the same orchestra played for audiences of 5,000 at cheap but popular Sunday evening Royal Albert Hall concerts. Another memorable evening had Arthur Rubinstein, playing one of his "retirement" concerts in his late 80s to a packed house paying just £5.
