I have owned a Mydac for over 10 years. About a year and a half ago I set out to upgrade it with a dac in the same price range. What I found was that every dac I tried (and I tried several) could beat the Mydac in clarity and resolution but many of them sounded clinical and were fatiguing if you listened for a long time. I have not heard the SMSL M500 MIII but I did try the SMSL SU-9n and did not like it.
I ended up with the SMSL d300 and am quite happy with it. It outperforms the Mydac in clarity and resolution, and it is a little more musical. It uses a Rohm dac chip that is usually found in much more expensive dacs.
You might not like the d300 so I wouldn't buy it (or any other dac) without a right of return.
I liked the d300 so much I also bought its big brother, the VMV D2r for my other system.
