Is your digital source plugged into a power conditioner of any kind? I generally don't use them for amps but find they lower noise and improve sound for digital components. Also, you might try isolating the digital source from other components that may be giving off RFI. It doesn't hurt to experiment with other interconnects. You will get varied opinions on the DAC-1. It's very good at it's price-point. As Todd suggested, your best bet it to try one. That's what you have to do to determine what is best to your ears. Find a nice one on Audiogon for around $750, and you should be able to resell it if you don't like it. Others that might also be good choices in the same range are the Lavry, CIAudio, and Bel Canto. I'm not sure what the good non-oversampled ones are in this price range.
You should also consider having your Sony modded to improve it's clocking, power supply, capacitors, output stage, etc. There are some very good modification packages out there that produce excellent digital music. That way you elevate your hi-res DSD sound also, not just your PCM played through a DAC.
