Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

Brains for Ears

> So the whole subject of recovering the information from a CD is far more complex than a simple question of bit accuracy.

You are trying to say there is more on a CD than 800 megabytes of data?
And you are trying to say that two CDs containing the identical 800 M
of data will not produce the same identical output when inserted into
a sane music reproduction system?

Of course you could be running into some problems at conversion time,
but then it no longer matters which CD is in the drive.

Or would you even dare to claim you can hear a difference between
a CD-R and an industry CD?

You are simply talking about something else than I do. I have those
800 M of music on my harddisk and there cannot be anything beyond
that. No voodoo no magic. Data. It's simply data. What you are talking
about is the problems in correctly reproducing those 800 M of data.

Sure, there are problems, especially if the device delivering the
data is not synchronized with the device converting it to signals.
No surprise these guys with a laptop and a firewire card are
achieving better results than the ones still fumbling with toslinks.
