Re: Ayre player

Headphone-based systems will undoubtedly give more bang for the buck than loudspeaker-based systems. When I was in high school, my system consisted of a Rek-O-Kut turntable (with ESL tonearm), a Dyna preamp (two PAM-1's and whatever the heck was the thing that made them into a stereo preamp), a Dyna Stereo 70, and a pair of Stax SRM-Mk II's. This was an insanely great sounding rig, and to this day is a personal touchstone for what is possible in terms of sound.

I haven't had a headphone-based system since then, as I prefer the communal aspects of loudspeakers as well as the more realistic soundfield. But as Mercuriell posted, there is no "right" answer in this pursuit. As long as you are happy, that's pretty much all that counts.
