I tried balanced and single-ended versions of same cables in same systems, but at the short lengths used in home systems (1.5-2m), sound quality and noise did not change.

What did change is the different gain/volume due to balanced operation, which is not always a positive thing if running high sensitivity speakers because of the reduced range of volume knob operation.
