On a true balanced system, the shield does not need to connect the two chassis together, and thus, you could ground the shield at the source end, and leave the load end floating.Unfortunately, not all syytems are actually a true balanced system, or one component, or the other, may not be. Then, p the pin 1 to pin 1 connection MUST be made, and this is typicaly handled by conecting the shield to both ends.

My method of wiring a balanced twisted pair avoids any chassis to chassis ground currents from flowing right next to the twisted pair wires, and actually shields them from it. When the pin 1 to pin 1 connection is needed, then this method of wiring can result in a cleaner overall situation, with reduced levels of RFI/EMI and a lowered noise floor.
