I encountered similar concerns about the quality of wall receptacles here in New Zealand (same as AUS) after moving down here for from the US.At that time I was also looking at replacing the PS Audio gear I had in the states with 240v equivalents, but they were 1) too expensive here and 2) used US style plugs - which are NOT covered by homeowners/contents insurance.
Be careful, and I would check your insurance policy mate.
