Perhaps.
I think a better metric is to judge the company in question and their reputation. VPI has a decades long reputation of offering value. Price gouging has never been in their business model.
I remember when Mat showed me the new VPI Prime at RMAF years ago. With arm I figured $10K?
I believe it was $3,495 including the arm. He certainly could have charged more.
One can speculate all day long about costs to manufacture, etc. And it is just that speculation.
Follow Ups:
So your point is: never question? Rely on the manufacturer to be fair in their pricing. Never doubt. Yes, I'm speculating but I'm doing it based on common sense, on my experience with other similar products. And my common sense tells me this pricing is out of bounds and that many manufacturers will price whatever the traffic will bear.
And what is your experience with Mat at RMAF supposed to prove? It's totally anecdotal. Just because YOU guessed that the table cost more than it actually did does not mean that VPI is always honest and fair in their pricing. "Price gouging has never been their business model." How do you know this? You're as much in the dark as I am about their manufacturing costs.
If the clear wand sells for ~$40 and both the dealer and VPI take 50% gross margin then it costs ~$10 to make. If the delrin tube sells for $80 then it costs ~$20 to make. Still double but the extra $10 doesn't seem too bad until you add everyone's profit. When I bought my 3-D printed Vinyl Bug RCM extra arm wands were only $10 to buy - but the company doesn't exist anymore so you need those profits to keep the lights on.
