If any of the sensors fail, and communication is disrupted across the car's data network, you could find yourself stranded. Literally. One seemingly non-essential sensor or control module can result in a no-crank/no-start issue, or the car will start but won't go into gear, etc.
And all of that crap exists because insurance companies lobbied for it. Now, those same insurance companies are complaining about the cost of repairing it and using as an excuse to raise premiums.
