The problem with that theory is that it presumes all of this is new.

It isn't. It's a recurring theme in American politics that's as old as the Republic itself.
We've had civil wars besides THE Civil War. Militias have risen and fallen, several times in my own lifetime.
Trump isn't Hitler. More like, he's the US version of Silvio Berlusconi.
And the electorate knows all about Trump. It voted for him anyway.
So it goes.
