I'm not so sure about that. I recall the carriages that were made by Panasonic (?) were not only more robust but used in many consumer products. By the late 90s these were replaced across the board, by lighter, flimsier, cheaper and more plasticy components. I rebuilt one CDP and had a difficult time sourcing the better carriage cannibalizing another unit. By the late 90s the front end electronics seemed to take two different courses. Those with better engineered discrete components and those with cheaper boards and reliance on firmware.
