I recently got one of these and was impressed by how clean the unit is. It uses the "legendary" 1541 DAC (maybe the last application) and a swing-arm laser.
Now, I'm trying to decide what is the "magical sound of the 1541" and what has gotten old. The sound is very smooth, almost sleepy, with a rounded-edge sound. It sounds like a unit made for classical rather than anything with a hard-driving tempo.
I found a NOS Pro-ject 1543 DAC which I now use.
So, what should be done to a typical 30-year-old cd player? Any recommended shops who would bring the unit back to its stock sound without going "full mod" at a higher cost.
Words of wizdom?
