Home Vintage Asylum

Classic gear from yesteryear; vintage audio standing the test of time.

They're as good as you want them to be...

Back in the 70's, Vinyl was of course, a major source for music in the home. So phono preamps were not an afterthought in Marantz gear. Marantz was a quality brand, you could certainly spend much less when shopping. However, 30 years later, any Marantz you may come across today is in some aspects an unknown quantity. You don't know in what state of repair it is in. 30 years ages gear as well as people. You may dig one out of someone's attic and find it is terrific. You may get one off eBay in "Mint" condition that sounds like crap and would make you wonder what all the fuss is about.
However, given enough knowledge and/or money, your "new" Marantz can be repaired, brought up to spec, or even upgraded with modern parts.
Having said all that; my opinion is that you would find a Marantz to be less "analytical" than modern gear. It should be smooth, musical, and fatigue free. It may seem mellow and laid back compared to modern "audiophile" equipment.

Good luck
