Actually, looking at the schematic, model 9s had five stages:1) a input/filter stage (1/2 6DJ8) , followed by
2) another common cathode voltage amplifier stage (second 1/2 of 6DJ8),
3) a phase splitter (6DJ8),
4) a driver stage (6CG7) and
5) the output stage (2 pairs of EL34s).Some people modified the model 9 by bypassing the first input/filter stage. Perhaps that is what your friend is thinking of.
