So I recently bought a Dynaco st70 that was restored by it's owner. When I first plugged in, I saw the amp flash quick and it blew a fuse. Then another fuse.I took all of the tubes out, fuse didn't blow.
Power tubes- O.K.
Tube rectifier- FLASH! I found the culprit. Must have shorted in transportation.
So, a week later (today), I replace the rectifier tube and fire it up. It is fine for about 15 or 20 seconds until a pop... I quickly turn off and unplug. The fuse wasn't blown.
I try firing up again without power tubes and it heats up with no pop.
I turn it on again with the rectifier tube replaced and it's fine, until a pop. Fuse did not blow, no funky smells or smoke and I actually had music playing already which from what I could hear, sounded good (for what that is worth).
So I ask, what is this pop? It tends to occur right around when the amp should be finishing heating up and the audio would start. I know these transformers are big, so could they just give a little pop when they are getting going? I may very well be listening for everything possible when I turn it on because I am being very careful. Hell, I'm holding my breath everytime I flick the switch. The fuse isn't blowing so maybe I shouldn't baby it? HELP!
THANKS IN ADVANCE!
