Home Vintage Asylum

Classic gear from yesteryear; vintage audio standing the test of time.

Lessons from my 800B experience

Ditto the tube checkout - I know there's a lotta tubes in there, but run 'em all through...obviously the outputs are the ones that can do the damage but it's no fun to chase your tail on a problem later only to find it was some front end tube on the way out.

The Fisher output iron is very nice, so definitely take a minute to do the protective wiring of a resistor from cathode to ground on the ouputs, low resistance (0.5; 1 ohm, 10W or so) resistor to protect the outputs in the event of a tube failure.

Finally, power supply and coupling caps should probably be replaced; if you want to preserve the vintage appearance under the hood, you can usually leave the cans on top and wire up modern replacements underneath the chassis.

With the above measures and a good set of tubes, a Fisher 800 is a pleasure to listen to - good tuning capability and sound quality, and very attractive to boot.

Enjoy!
