Re: how does a preamp work

Well, actually a Phono preamp circut may be PART of a Preamplifier, rather than the entire preamplifier. But that Preamplifier also provides gain circuts for other sources such as Tape, Tuner, & any other Auxiliary input sources. And of course Aux can suffice for CD since often CD had not yet been invented. The preamplifier provides input Selection, gain, Volume & maybe Bass & Treble control for whatever source is selected. Plus as you mentioned possibly other control functions. But generally the term preamp does not mean JUST a Phono gain stage. And of course there were Hi-fi separates long before the invention of Stereo (some of us are old enough).
