The bay can be a good resource, but you must remember to bid against the world value, not just flea market values, if you want to win. It is hard to win the good, vintage gear. Americans generally do not value music and musical equipment like so many other cultures.
Ask yourselves if you have enlightened the next generation that tubes might sound better and that LPs are excellent sounding on a good system. These are simple facts that Asians and Europeans seem to naturally continue the obsession. The DIY market in the USA is soft compared to an ever-growing market throughout Asia, especially in Japan and Korea. Some outstanding output transformers are being made in China, as well as tubes. But, that is for another thread...Just remeber, you are bidding against the world. What we, in the USA, think is common, might be rare overseas.
The bay is not fun; it is actually like work, finding and selling.
What I can say about the bay, that keeps me going, is that more and more rare gear has popped up there, although slowly. If you check Audiogon, prices are staggering, but newer high end gear is easily found. Vintage gear on ebay can be easier to find, but it might still not be affordable to us. For newer collectors, the hifi search is an expensive one...
