I don't think I would be out of line if I said that a true choke input power supply, ideally LCLC with a tube rectifier, class A1 operation, and reasonable quality power supply transformer, chokes, and output transformers are the heart and soul of any amp and always make good economic sense. So by all means build simple circuits first but do yourself a big favor and buy quality iron that you can and will use time and time again. You will be far ahead in the end. You don't need Tango but you want at least Hammonds best line....300 series for power and a 16XX output rated for twice your intended wattage. If you are a push pull guy I'd get the big 100+ watt hammond 5K...maybe a lundahl 20 watt 10K...the one electron power transformer...and a pair of lundahl chokes...throw in some motor run caps and you have the basic parts to try many different circuits. I know this might seem like a lot to spend but even with a simple circuit I bet you will know the amp you just made totally smokes any thousand dollar amp around.
Of course then you will decide, like me, you have to have some horn loaded speakers....then real sticker shock sets in. Oh and don't forget the preamp...and the turntable because CD's won't be good enough anymore. Did I mention maybe you want to bail before it's too late?
