I built two mono amps because I was given some power transformers and chokes that wouldn't run a stereo version. GZ34's were used instead of the GZ37 in the stereo amp. I had a lot of trouble eliminating hum but I finally did it by moving the Hammond OPT as far as I could from the power transformer, more than 7" center to center. Could the open frame Hammond OPT's be sensitive to magnetic fields or could it be dodgy PT's? Don't know but it bears watching if you decide to build one. I used a 470 ohm cathode resistor as recommended by Alex (see link). The EL34's are running about 60 ma with almost 400 volts on the plate which could be a bit hot so I'll substitute a larger resistor to bring it down to about 50 ma. This is my first (quasi) SET and yes it's a bit loosie goosie in the bass though it goes quite low and the treble is a little bit rolled off but there is a certain ease and organic wholeness through the midrage that I find quite beguiling.Cheers Steve
