Personally, I hate working with perf boards. You need access to both sides; you have to keep flipping the thing over to make connections (twisting leads together) and then the parts are kinda flopping around. It's a REAL pain to make any changes.I really don't care much for terminal strips either, though if you're working with a very simple circuit with true point-to-point wiring using the tube sockets for most things, then they can be handy.
For most stuff I prefer turret boards, or alternatively eyelets. I have pulls from old equipment with a row of turrets along each edge, but you can buy them new from places that cater to guitar amp DIYers. They might not seem ideal from a purist point of view but it is possible to get a clean layout. You often end up with wires running from the board to the tube sockets. This is familiar to anyone that has worked on guitar amps though it might seem weird to others. It's actually kinda nice. I have entire circuits that I've saved just by pulling the board from the chassis. Some day I might use them for something (ha ha ha!!)
A nicer solution is to make your own boards. You're not limited to putting the posts along the edge of the board. Instead you can make a nice layout, something like a printed circuit but without the traces. They can be very neat, but are WAY easier to work with than printed circuits.
Mouser used to sell simple eyelets for next to nothing, but I don't see them anymore. A quick google search turned up http://www.turretboards.com/ which sells universal boards as well as the parts and tools to make your own. I wouldn't be surprised if there's someplace cheaper to get the parts. (I've been using turrets and eyelets that I picked up surplus who knows where...)
