Doug,I'm holding an old Tektronix Type 53/54C plugin here and I stripped out several Tek ceramic solder strips and tube sockets yesterday. I can tell you that they did not use 360 degree wrap or 180 degree wrap. Nearly all soldering is directly on component leads, nearly all are straight pass through, with a few 90 degree bends. Leads were often carried on from one solder point to another junction.
I don't know how they did it. I play with a lot of old equipment and I consider Tek to be the most reliable and most likely to actually work of any of it. I know they used a special silver bearing solder. They used to include a small roll of it inside of every scope in case you needed to make repairs. I suspect that all of their leads were bright polished before they soldered them and I suspect they had an especially well trained workforce. So I would say it's the soldering technique and not how dizzy you make the lead by wrapping it in circles. Practice, practice, practice.
