Re: freq resp irregularity of Curtis Mathis Console

Yes, at this point I am pretty convinced it is some sort of EQ or loudness circuit similar to what you describe.

Will look at the unit again this weekend. Sucks though since you have to de-install the reciever chassis from the console.

I confess I don't know what a feedback loop is. I am new to this. If I can locate the eq circuit can I just cut out the offending components?

It seems to me like replacing the volume control will do no good if the eq circuit is the problem.

At any rate, bypassing the eq circuit/replacing the volume control may be beyond my capabilities. I probably won't be able to locate the eq circuit, and the volume control looks like it might be hard to extract.

My best bet seems to be to get or build a little volume-only preamp for it since I know it sounds good with an outboard preamp.

Might be fun to build, it would be my first DIY build. I have some parts laying around so I think all I really need is an op-amp if I can tie it in to the units power supply. And I do have access to another old console and a crappy old Nikko I would be willing to sacrifice. Where can I get plans for a pre-amp I can easily put together?
