Newbie Question-classic Williamson Circuit Mods Improvement?

I have inherited a pair of Radio Craftsmen C-500A mono amps which as im sure most of you are aware use a what I think is a classic Williamson Circut. (KT-66 triode wired)For sentimental reasons I have restored the chassis and transformers to an almost new condition.
Electronically, the innards on these units are quite a mess and appear to have been extensively played with by the prior owner or owners. I suspect that time and too many diyer's has taken its toll. Now, despite tinkering with PIO caps and replacing resistors, they do not sound too good. In fact they are bit harsh. This is disappointing considering the history and pedigree of this product and the internet postings on the trannies used (Most likely Stancor according to VTV).
Since I have not been able to get the amps to sound better then just
average, the consensus here is that the amps should be gutted.
My question thus becomes, are these amps now worth an entire
rebuild? If so, would one be limited by the transformers to the precise circuit used in the original design? Or has anyone experimented with a circut which would use these trannies and tubes but is soncially superior (and reliable)
Frankely, i would have to have them professionally restored as I have limited technical skills. but I i am hesitant to throw away money on a rebuild if it would not be demonstrably "better" then what they sound like now. As such but would appreciate any opinions or suggestions as to circuit refinements, or design. "Sell them to me responses will create a smile but not an offer"
Anyway I have limited knowlege of the transformer specs except they are the square variety and VTV reports "inteleaved winding, 25mHy leakage inductance, 120Hy pomary inductance and with output power 10hz to 50khz"
