I don't know what your chassis looks like - that would help. I agree with Jimmy - if you can, put in a pair of those big white ceranic UX sockets. UX5 will give you 27, 37, 56, 76 and many more. UX4 will give you 26, 12a, 01A, 71A and all those types. There are loads of designs you can search for that will suit these, the most used being probably the 76 and 26.
If you want to go with octal, 6P5GT or 2C22/7193 are maybe the most obvious - any designs for 6SN7 will suit. I like the 1626 too. Any of the above should raise your game, and the DHTs like the 26 are in another class.
