Do It Yourself (DIY) paradise for tube and SET project builders.

I am using both in a new rebuild

67.9.31.105

I am using both types of caps that you are considering with excellent results. I rebuilt the power supply in my x101 amplifier. It's a CLCRCRCRC filter. Rectification is of the tube variety. Here are the details:

5uf solen metalized polyproplene-10H 36ohms lundahl choke-47uf panasonic electrolytic (EEB series high frequency cap, not TSHX series)-2k clarostat wirewound, 100uf Panasonic TSHB - 4.7k caddock ms223-47uf jensen lytic- 10k riken-47uf Jensen lytic- 47k riken-22uf panasonic EEB.

I played the amplifier before the power supply modification described above and it was lifeless and dull sounding. Not much detail and it did not have a sound that captured your attention.

I have extensive experience with these amps as I own a bunch of them, so I new that something was wrong. I had played one before that was stock and it sounded very involving. This particular one was in storage for about 35 years so its safe to say the caps were shot.

After the rebuild, the amplifier has so much more detail and the bass is really outstanding. Noise floor has dropped off completely and high frequencies come through with great clarity and are very natural sounding.

I also noticed that when I added the Jensen caps the midrange appeared to sound more natural as well. It seemed to come to life more, but not in a way that was more forward sounding. It was just very natural and real sounding. I honestly cannot say for sure if this was really the result of the jensen lytic because I did not listen extensively prior to this change. However, I am happy with the results of this change so far.

One important point to mention is that on this amplifier I still have the stock volume control. I mention this because I had some problems with it that seemed to go away when I cleaned it with contact cleaner. They seem to be returning, so my next project will be to replace the VC with a new one. I believe that it will make a significant improvement.

I would recommend using PSUD to redesign the power supply. I used it to model this supply before testing it. Measurements from the simulation were very close to simulations. It's a great program.

A final thought on lytics in the PSU. I really don't understand the negative connotation with them. I have used motor run and lytics and had outstanding results with both of them. Perhaps some lytics are very bad and the brands I am using are of higher quality. I really don't understand the logic behind it. Regardless, I strongly recommend both the panasonic caps and the Jensens. They appear to be of good quality.

I will provide a full review of this amplifier once I have had more listening time with it and make the VC change.

Good luck with your PSU rebuild and if you have any questions, I will do the best I can to help.
