Hah! the reason

why those 6550 bases don't come off is the metal shell is soldered to one of the pins, pin #1 I believe. You may want to sacrifice one tube and crack it apart to see how they are joined.
Metal bases sound quite different from the bakelite ones, BTW....

For older tubes I often will add solder to pins and will sometimes restore continuity. I also routinely take apart interesting bases (ceramic bases for expample), and switch them to other simlar tubes.

Your iron should be hot enough, but you may want to add a bit of eutectic solder to make removal easier.
