I've had trouble with pots burning up the wipers before. Lose the wiper, you may lose current. If the pot is setting bias this can be disasterous. If a pot has to carry dc its best to use one that's way overrated for the application, and it can be a good idea to either parallel it with a fixed resistor or tie the wiper to one end of the pot to prevent a complete circuit failure.
