Perhaps I posted too soon....Pressing my ear to each speaker in turn, it seems that the reason the hum is louder when both inputs are inserted is because it is now in stereo. That is I think it is simply twice as loud with both inputs inserted (surprise!). I no longer think there is a right/left interaction that is causing the increased hum.
I wonder if I could get the left and right channels hum out of phase with one another if they would appear to cancel to the listener....
Well, still trying to minimize the hum I'm hearing. I hate to have to go DC on the filaments.
