The original AN M-7 preamp uses a line stage with the 6072, a close cousin to the 12ax7. I don't think you'd have any trouble dropping a 12ax7 into this design w/o modification. I would also add that many vintage (highly desired) preamps use this tube all through them, can't be all bad!
