It all works, you just have to make sure that the parts are up to the task. As for switching the high voltage AC....First, unless you are using a full wave diode bridge (4 diodes) you are still switching DC current (It is not truely AC as the current is always in the same direction through the relay contacts). Secondly the voltage is usually much higher and the relay should be rated properly.Pete.
