Assuming the attenuator is a potentiomiter or equivelent then the output impedance will vary with the position. At fully attenuated (off) the impedance will be 0. At full volume the impedance will be equal to the output impedance in parallel with the attenuator impedance. At 6 dB attenuation the output impedance will be the highest, at 1/2 the attenuator's total impedance.The length of cable that can be driven depends on the attenuator impedance and the cable capacitance. The load at the far end of the cable does not effect the high frequency response.
The iggest problem with this type of circuit is that the frequency response changes with the volume setting and in some case is quite noticable.
The advantage of it is that the preamp noise is attenuated along with the music when at low volume. This make the preamp seem quiter that it actually is.
