Stikes me that modifying something that is all based on a circuit board is going to be more difficult than something that is built point-to-point as upgraded parts are often larger than the lower quality ones they are intended to replace. That being said, I'd agree that the biggest cost in a SET amp is the iron. I have had tremendous luck with James output transformers and a pair of those would run you $200, add in another $250 for power tfr and chokes and you'd be at $450. Now add $200 for tubes (guessing) and about 60 for two Hammond chassis, and $40 for most small parts and you'd be at... $750 to build from scratch... hmm... By the way, for a bit more you could get into the new Paramont from Bottlehead and that looks like a tremendous amp. Don't know if that helps, but I guess it comes down to pros and cons for you based on your abilities and your budget.
