If you switch at zero crossing, the current ramps up. A non-synchronous switch can apply current at the peak of the sine wave.Look at most AC power SSR's and they all zero crossing. In fact it's far more difficult to find units that don't employ zero crossing such as would be required for phase control (dimmers).
As for inductive kick. These things are very tough. Now I wouldn't use one to start the compressor in my air central conditioner, but a power amp transformer is well withiun their SOA.
I use three 25a units on my HT system to bring up six Hafler 220 & 120 power amps in sequence of two each. Works flawlessly.
