I've built one with 3/2 6CG7 per channel and one with 3/2 5687 or 7044 per channel (not a good idea -- heater hum is intolerable with those tubes!)Problem is you're amplifying more noise as well, so I can see why you wouldn't want to do it that way. Adding another tube stage for MC would be right out.
Next one will probably contain unbypassed 12AX7s and a cathode follower driver of some sort, so I can keep my passive split RIAA network.
