It is just an indicator, but as such helps tune stations in just like modern tuning meters. Adjust tuning dial for narrowest gap on indicator tube to indicate best tuning dial position & the tightness of closure is dependent on the received signal strength. Yes, there were different tuning-eye tube *patterns*.
