Home Tube DIY Asylum

Do It Yourself (DIY) paradise for tube and SET project builders.

It all depends...

Hi.

For low efficiency speakers, El-34 is the wiser choice over 2A3 SE,
given sonic preference, which is subjective, is not a deciding factor.

Philips tube data book specifies in detail EL-34 class A SE:-
(g2 connected to plate)

With Vp=375V, Vg3=0V, Rk+370R, Rp=3KR, Ip=70mA, Vi=18.9Vrms,
we get 6W rms O/P with 8% distortion w/o NFB.

I have read report of a power amp with one 12AX7 driving one EL-34 SE UL (Vp=275V) delivering 8W (23Hz-33KHz +/-1dB), measured with 8R/2uF reactive load. THD not over 1% at 1W with optional global NFB max not over 8dB.

Good listening

PS: my basic-upgraded stock ST-70 is always on PP triode mode (switchable UL-triode), & I love it.
