I originally wanted to use a Graetz bridge, to get hash-free operation, but I found that too many volts were lost that way.Now I use an SS bridge, in series with two paralleled 6D22S TV damper thermionic diodesand it works well, giving me a drop of only 8 volts. The 6D22S diodes are in the negative line, to avoid a dangerous voltage at the top cap.
I don't believe thermionic diodes used in this way reduce hash from the SS diodes but my MUR4100E diode bridge doesn't seem to be noisy anyway. After the SS bridge, I have a 0.1uF cap in parallel with the 235uF smoothing cap, then the 2x 6D22S and a 5H choke (both in the neg. line), then 470uF reservoir cap. No noise, no hum, slow start-up and very stiff.
