Home Tube DIY Asylum

Do It Yourself (DIY) paradise for tube and SET project builders.

An option to consider

First you have made no mention of speakers or what wattage you require. But for now lets assume a 6v6 or el84 push pull amp will suffice. You have two basic options for DIYing. You can either buy parts or buy something already built and rebuild it. A Dynaco ST35 could be turned into something nice with very litte work but they are not cheap. However a Magnavox is dirt cheap (well under a $100) and has a nice power transformer, often with a choke. The output transformers could be upgraded with Hammonds or better later on. The chassis is large enough to do what you want. I have gotten a lot of mileage out of my magnavox and recently rebuilt it using Joel T's schematic with Hammond 10K output transformers (which Poinz kindly dontated). All it took was a few resistor changes, some new coupling caps, and a couple of hours of work. It is a cheap and easy way to get started. The magnavox I used started off with a 5u4, two 12ax7's, and four 6v6's. I think its model# was 175DD.
