First of all I'm an experimenter and not very knowledgeable about circuits. What I ended up doing is use the edcor 8k/8 outputs which do have the air gap. They seem to have a 35:1 turns ratio which is pretty close to the 15k/600 offered by Magnaquest for the 6n1p, I think? I measured it by applying 120ac to the primary and got 3.5v on the secondary. It works pretty well with the 6n1p single-ended but seems to lack some bass. I do like this circuit better than the simple 6n1p cathode follower preamp I'd been messing around with before. I think I like transformer coupling. It seems to preserve the tones and musical structures better. And doesn't fall apart when the volume is cranked.
