I understand what you're saying and I agree. I said in an earlier post to this thread, fixed bias would be better. You can use separate cathode resistors with bypass caps for AB1 (e.g. Mullard 5-20 and all the Leak amps) but you won't get as much power. The use of cathode bias was, I suspect, to improve reliability, to avoid needing closely-matched OP tubes and to avoid having to readjust bias voltage periodically or when changng tubes.

Unfortunately, this topic is not relevant to the original question in this thread, so I'll shut up!
