Home Tube DIY Asylum

Do It Yourself (DIY) paradise for tube and SET project builders.

Summary of issues

1. The Curcio driver might not have enough voltage swing to drive 6B4G's to full power. Often, 6922s are run at 90V on the plate.
At 400ish volts, 6B4Gs need 120Vp-p drive for full power. It's tough
to ask a tube biased at 90V and RC coupled to swing 60V up and down.
The Curcio driver will perform really well within its design center,
however, that doesnt mean the driver will be able to get the max power out of the output stage. I'd have to look at the actual schematic though...

2. The Sovteks can be run hot. However, the ST-70 transformer is limited in how much current you can run. I'd run the 6B4G's at 50mA
and 430V - thats pretty hot, and what the EL34s run at. If you want to be more friendly to them, pop in a 5u4G and drop the voltage down to 370V. Still, run them at 50mA. Still nice and toasty.

3. In general, with triodes, the hotter you run them, the more linear they are.

4. The interstage driver has alot of advantages: excellent matching of load to driver, selection for tubes that outperform the 6922 in distortion figures. But, it's $200 more no matter how you cut it.

5. Reproducing the Amity has alot of merit. You can always buy
the 6B4's and listen to them now. Then, you can build an Amity with
a mixture of new boutique parts and NOS surplus parts. Once its up and running ; sell the ST-70 and use the proceeds of sale to pay the credit card bill on Amity components.
