And those loudspeakers can kill you at the end; yes everything is critical. Wait until you get into the Zen of cartridge set-up for optimum performance; most disappointments in vinyl can be traced to a less than perfect cartridge set-up including arm/cartridge lack of synergy. The only good general advice is to trust your own ears, read up on things and to look at equipment that has a loyal following that has stood the test of time. I have been really happy with Bottlehead equipment and am on the verge of an all-Bottlehead system from phono pre to preamp to (in the mail)amp to speaker. Check out their board. It is one of the friendliest and most informative ones around. The archives contain much valuable information. Only the turntable, arm, cartridge and step-up which they don't dable in at the moment is from other sources. However, there are other good components out there-try to hear some. The DIY road certainly gives you great bang for your buck and the kits are a good compromise for those of us without extensive knowledge of electronics.
