...I've had totally excellent results with the Russian "5881" AKA 6N3C-E. Drops in w/o mod and filament draws considerably less current than KT66 so PT runs a little cooler. They sound maybe 97% of GECKT66 but max power output is a watt or two less. Readily available and cheep and quite rugged IME. Major drawback: They're nowhere near as pretty as KT66.Actually, any 6L6GC will work well. Many report how great a pair of 6L6Gs (not GAs,GAYs or GBs) sound. I believe the QII will over-run them so I haven't tried them myself but if you've got access to a stash, it might be worth a try. Big envelope also looks almost as cool as KT66.
